If someone cuts you up or pulls out in front of you......?
What do you do? Would you honk the horn and get all pissed off. Or would you calmly keep going and show your cool?
Three years ago, I was driving down an eight lane road in my city and during a busy time of day, an old 80's model silver vehicle pulled behind me. Now I was cruising along with the other traffic at approx. 60 mph. He was obviously in a hurry because he kept coming up on me and then back off and he was also trying to swerve into other lanes but there was too much traffic. After he came within a foot or so from my rear for the fourth or fifth time, I made the decision to tap my breaks just enough to make the break lights come on hoping that would cause him to get the hint and back off. Well, this just angered him more. As I was approaching the on-ramp to the interstate, he finally got a space in the lane to the left of me. I kept my eye on him in my rearview mirror until he was out of sight. I knew he was coming up on my left to pass me and I was expecting a middle finger, or something to that effect. Instead, I looked over as he was passing me, and there was a gun, pointed right at me. Almost simultaniously, I heard a terribly loud crack, as if it was inside my head. At that instant, I knew he shot at me. Ironically, this was the only day of that entire month, that I did not have my children in the car with me. I immediately started to feel my head for signs of a wound but there was nothing. I checked my door and window, nothing. For whatever reason, my reaction was to follow him off an exit close to where my husband's office was. I grabbed my cell and dialed 911. When I looked up, he was gone. I circled around and drove up and down the side streets hoping to see the vehicle, but to no avail. I told the police that I would meet them outside of my husbands office, which was about two miles down the same road, and they arrived there about an hour later. Nice that they took their time huh?! Its funny because we watched three cop cars pass us as we were waiting! Well, in conclusion, when the first officer arrived, he took the report and explained that the likeliness of this guy being found was slim to none, and thats about all he had to say, but when the second officer showed up, he inspected my car, and found where a 38 cal. bullet hit the aluminum panel between the driver's side front and back windows. The bullet hit at an angle, so it deflected, but if he would have fired a hundredth of a second sooner, it would have gone straight through the back driver's side window, and into my head. Talk about an eye opener! The officer said that the loud crack I heard was the bullet hitting the car, not the actual shot and when I saw the gun, he had already shot it.
I have experienced P.T.S.D. because of this and I get very nervous when another vehicle pulls up beside me. I dont make eye contact at all. Now, no matter what the situation, I keep my cool and if a driver is acting like an @ss, I just get away from them. The experience has changed my husband's style of driving too. He used to get hard core road rage. Not anymore.
