What is that stuff on my windshield, and how do I get rid of it?
I'm talking about that film that collects on the interior of my auto glass. It drives me nuts driving to work with the morning sun, and ordinary glass cleaners just seem to smear it around. My wife and I don't smoke, and anyone who lit up in my car would be ejected (Remember JB's Aston Martin in Goldfinger?) into traffic. What is it made of? Anything that works well at getting the stuff off?
Over time, it outgasses into the car, and sticks to whatever it lands on. The heat generated from sunlight and running the defroster can speed up the process sometimes. That "new car smell" is mostly this plasticizer evaporating from the interior and being concentrated in the enclosed environment. Products like Armor All contain plasticizer, and can increase the problem you are having.
It is an organic substance, which is why it is so hard to clean. Its purpose is to lubricate the polymer molecules in plastic to allow the bigger structure to bend farther. When cleaning it off of your windshield, your glass cleaner must get between the plasticizer and the glass.
Your frustration with windex and other cleaners is understandable, but not because of the cleaning product. Removing plasticizer is like removing motor oil. It will take several wipes to get it all. Use a thorough amount of windex, wipe most of it off, and allow it to dry. Repeat the process several times.
You can also try alternating with common dishsoap. The dishsoap is better at surrounding and isolating organics, and windex is better at removing soap residue. I hope this helps.
