What do I need to know about wattage and my home theater receiver?
I have a cheap Sony HTS, 5.1, incuded 5 shelf speakers and subwoofer for $199 three years ago. I think the receiver is 100 Watt.
It worked great for my 2 bedroom apartment, but I’ve recently upgraded to a large home prewired for surround sound. I’ve purchased four 90 watt 5.5″ Boston Acoustic in-ceiling speakers and a Polk CS1 Center speaker upto 125 watts.
My concern? I’ve hooked up the CS1 and am not getting the volume I want (I didn’t expect it to sound like the system in the store, but I did expect it to sound better than the original center speaker I had). Now I am concerned to cut holes in my ceiling for the four surround speakers to find they don’t perform any better than the bookshelves. Do I just install the rear channel in-ceiling speakers until I can afford a higher wattage receiver? How many watts do I need to support these speakers? What’s a decent, budget brand?
Wattage isn’t as important as people make it out to be. The wattage mentioned for the new spkrs I assume is the max rating, the wattage handle before the spkr is damaged. You need to look more at the min sensitivity rating of the spkr(s). How many decibels(dB) required for the spkr perform at its optimal sound. Then compare to your rcvrs specs. The rcvr is rated at 100 watts, is this the combined wattage of all channels or per channel? Regardless, that rating is with constant source material(1k Hz sine wave or just an annoying buzz/hum sound) w/ the vol setting @ max. Which you should never have to reach more 3/4 max if the rcvr is anywhere near descent quality.
You left out the most important factor, to help answer your question. What is the impedence of the spkrs & what is your rcvrs impedence handling. Sony, I’ll assume 8 ohms. Any load less than 8 ohms presented to the rcvr, and its struggling. Result is low volume @ high settings. Its like hooking a garden hose to a hydrant. You won’t get much out, but pressure will build. In the rcvr, this results in excess heat, not good. Email me with details if you want an accurate answer. But Sony is a step in the right direction.
