How does one use Speaker Power Rating when Selecting a speaker?
I am currently thinking about getting a new center channel speaker. My current Receiver is the Onkyo TX-SR707. My understanding the center channel on the receiver is 100Watts. With that said, what impact does the power rating have. For example would it do me any good to spend the extra money on getting a center channel with the power rating of 300Watts or should I save money and stick with a low end center channel with a max power rating of around 100Watts? Basically if my center channel is 100Watts, what is the value added of getting a center channel speaker that has more than 100W or is there none?
Also With that said which of these speakers would probably give me the most bang for the money and why?

Power rating are the ability to displace heat from the drivers voice coils before damage occurs. There are two factors, one is voice coil heat and the other is maximum excursion ( X-Max). A driver has to move in and out to keep the voice coil cool, but if pushed too much, you can blow the woofer, tweeter and some cases a crossover capacitor.
The power rating of a speaker is really not that important as long as you do not run the speaker into a high distortion level or play really large transient peaks. If common sense is used, there shouldn’t be a problem.
Normally, but not in all cases, a speaker with a higher power rating will have larger voice coils, more x-max and may have a better crossover. It may also be less efficiency.( DB’s at 1 watt )
Example:
speaker A is 85 db’s at 1 watt but will handle 250 watts.
88db’s-2 watts / 91 db’s-4 watts / ect / tops out at 109 db’s-256 watts
speaker B is 90 db’s at 1 watt but will handle 100 watts.
93db’s-2 watts/ 96db’s-4 watts/ ect / tops out a 111 db’s at 128 watts which is just above it’s max power rating. So @ 109 to 110 would be expected without damage to the speaker.
Again, if you have clean power and do not go into a high level of distortion, you can go above your max power rating.
Out of your choices given, the Polk CS20 would be the best. However, you may find a better center for the money on the used market. You can find High- End center channels on E-bay or Audiogon that would be better that the choices above. Unless your already using Polks as your mains and surrounds, I would go the used route.
