What are the consequences of using a smaller than recommended power wire?
Ok, I have a kicker zx300.1 installed in my car. It uses 8 gauge power and ground, and a 60 amp inline fuse. I just got a zx750.1. It is recommended to use a 4 gauge wire with a 80 amp inline fuse. I dont think I have the money to get it installed....(120 bucks...Im broke) and I am being impatient. So what would happen If i just swapped out the old with the new?
All the answers here are kind of halfway explained... Here's some things to keep in mind:
1.) It will play fine as long as you don't have it turned up to high. If you're going to play it really loud then you should get the wire changed.
2.) Fuses will continue to blow as was said, if you exceed the current allowed. The only way to solve this is to get a bigger fuse. The thing about this is that the fuse is designed to limit the current that flows through. The whole point of this is to prevent damage to the system, so if you get a bigger fuse but keep the wire the same then it's likely you'll do damage to your system if played to loud, and the fuse won't save it.
3.) Smaller wire will get very hot if there is too much current in it. It is very possible for it to melt, and depending on what it is near/touching it would become a fire hazard.
4.) With less power to the amp, and the fact that it is struggling to produce power to the sub, you'll lose sound quality as well
5.) Smaller wire will make your system less efficient, and struggle more to produce sound. Again, you can damage components from doing this. I have a program that calculates efficiency and I'll just shoot you some of the numbers from it.
With your Kicker zx300.1 and 8 gauge wire (also assuming your power wire is 14 feet long), you're losing 39.34 watts, for 86.89% efficiency. This is considered an ok figure, but could be better.
Now assuming you keep the 8 ga wire, and the length of that wire is the same, for the zx750.1 amp, you're losing 245.81 watts of power, so you're running at 67.21% efficiency. This is absolutely terrible to be quite honest. My chart says that 4 ga is a little bit questionable since you would still lose 100.42 watts with that. If you used 2 ga wire you would lose 62.8 watts for 91.62% efficiency which is pretty decent.
