Where is the COM port located on my Gateway laptop?

I am getting a new computer. I read that to transfer my files from my old computer I need to link the two computers with a null modem serial cable, which plugs into the COM port. I can’t find a COM port. My laptop has a phone jack, an ethernet port, a monitor port, and a serial port, as well as USB ports and pc card slots.

More complicated than that.

A com port is simply a software name for a communications port on your computer. Several different types of plugs can be identified as a com port. Serial. USB. PS2. Et cetera. It isn’t a physical device, COM is just a way of identifying difference inputs/outputs to your computer.

If you have an old computer, it probably does have usb but does have a serial port. You say your laptop has one, so use that for your transfer. Just go to the store and buy a serial cable and hook them up. Your new machine should have a fairly easy time connecting, the problem will be your old computer. Depending on the OS you are running it may be easy or difficult to get it to want to play along.
