Will Blu-ray players still look as fantastic on a 1080i as well as 1080p HD television?
I bought my 42″ plasma about 2 years ago or so. It’s capable of 480p/720p/1080i … but no 1080p. 
Am I going to need to buy a new television capable of 1080p just to get the beautiful picture quality of Blu-ray players and discs or will 1080i do just as well?

The difference between 1080i and 1080p is not noticeable at all, especially at a proper viewing distance. I have a Panasonic 50″ 720p/1080i plasma and the picture if fantastic off of my blu-ray player. The difference between the 720p and 1080i is obvious.
The “i” stand for interlace whereas the “p” stands for progressive…it has more to do with the way the signal is displayed than the actual crispness of the picture. I have friends with 1080p televisions and like I said earlier, no difference in pic quality. Keep your plasma and enjoy!
