Antenna, curly on lower portion, about two or three feet high, on center of roof of white vehicle. What is it?
A truck type car drove by our house with a huge, strange looking antenna on top of it. Could this be for surveillance? Or could it just be for good reception of cable or something haha?
If you can, please say how you know or give some sort of justification for why you think that.
Long antennas (long, that is, with respect to the wavelength they're transmitting/receiving) are commonly 1/4 or 1/2 wavelength long. The speed of light is 3e8 m/s, so a 1 m (40") 1/4 wave antenna is designed for (3e8 m/s) / (1 m / 1/4) = 75 MHz. It's too short to be a tuned antenna for CB radio (27 MHz and 49 MHz), and too long to be a short dipole CB antenna, since the efficiency of a short dipole doesn't improve with length. It could be a half-wave antenna for a MURS (multi use radio system) two-way radio at 150 MHz, or for a marine VHF radio at 156 to 174 MHz, or for a 2 meter ham radio.
If it's closer to 2 ft it could be a 1/4 wave antenna for a 450 MHz public or private land mobile transceiver (radiotelephone) or maritime radio, or for a 460 MHz student/experimental transmitter.
The curly bit is an inductive load, used to tune the antenna so that it radiates efficiently.
m
