First time install of a Metra 70-2003 wire harness to new cd player, how?
I am using a Metra 70-2003 wire harness to install my new cd player. This installation requires a fuse tap to bring in the 12V power. How do I safely do this procedure?? I need a website with pictures on how to fuse tap,and more specifically how to install THIS wiring harness
Judging from the number of questions you've asked on this exact issue, it seems like you're having a surprising amount of trouble with this. You might want to consider taking the car to a professional installer; or purchase one of the available chime modules to generate an accessory power source for you. The adapter modules make installation much easier in a 2001 Cavalier.
Without the module, you need a multimeter with a voltage function to do this installation correctly.
First, open the fuse box on the driver's end of the dash and locate an accessory fuse. If you look at the fuses, you'll see that each has a pair of tiny openings at the top. You can use your multimeter to test the fuses for voltage. Attach the black multimeter probe to a ground point, such as a seat bolt or a metal brace under the dash. Set the meter for DC volts, 20v range (if it's not auto-ranging). Touch the red probe to the opening on the top of each fuse. Most of the fuses should test at around 12.5 volts when you probe the opening.
If you find a fuse that tests at 0 volts, turn your ignition key to the Accessory position and test the fuse again. You're looking for a fuse that shows voltage in the ACC position, and no voltage with the key off. A sunroof fuse or windshield wiper fuse might qualify.
Once you've found your fuse, remove it from the fuse box. Turn the key to ACC and use the multimeter to test both the sockets that the fuse came from. One socket should show voltage, and one should show no voltage, with the key in the ACC position. Remember which is which.
Insert one leg of the fuse through the hole in the fuse tap that's included with the 70-2003 harness. Replace the fuse into the fuse box, making sure that the leg with the fuse tap attached goes into the socket that had NO voltage on the earlier test. By doing this, you'll be ensuring that the fuse protects your new wire as well as the original circuit. This reduces the chance of setting your car on fire if your new wire gets pinched or shorted.
The red wire that comes with the 70-2003 should have a disconnect terminal at one end. Slide this over the terminal on the fuse tap. Route the wire through the opening next to the fuse box, and under the dash to the radio opening. Connect it to the red wire from your new radio's harness. Make sure the wire won't get tangled with any moving parts under the dash, and that it can't fall down and get tangled with your feet while you're driving.
Match the other wires from the 70-2003 harness up to the matching wire colors on your new stereo harness, and connect them together. Be sure to tape off any leftover wires. Don't connect the red wire on the 70-2003 plug to anything. Attach the 70-2003 harness to the factory radio plug, then connect your new radio. If you've done everything correctly, the new radio should turn on and off with the key switch.
When I install in one of these cars professionally, I use a different method; but it requires different tools and isn't quite as easy for a DIY-er.
